Work smarter not harder with your local marketing
This newsletter will cover a very important lesson for local marketing and life in general: work smarter, not harder.
Yesterday (while trying to think about what to write for this week's newsletter), a man approached me while I was sitting on the beach. He asked me if I was interested in renting a boat to go island hopping or snorkeling.
I did want to rent a boat.
In fact, earlier in the day, I was at a market and saw a flyer for a boat rental service, and I was so interested that I picked it up, looked at the pretty pictures, then put it back.
So here were two very different, hard, and time-consuming marketing efforts to get me as a customer. One business owner went from store to store asking permission to place their flyers. The other walked from person to person on a hot sunny beach repeating their pitch over and over again.
I'm going to rent a boat. Can you guess which business I picked?
Neither! I went to Google Maps and typed in "boat rentals near me" because I'm not that special (sorry, Mom!). I'm just like 9 out of 10 other people that would simply go to Google and pick the highest-ranked one with the best reviews.
The business that will win will be the one that paid an agency to get their Google Business Profile to the top 3 and did a great job getting reviews to make me feel comfortable that I won't have to swim back to shore. If 90% of people are looking for a business like yours on Google Maps, you should probably focus 90% of your efforts and budget there.
