Is social media marketing... dead?

Or is it like your childhood goldfish that's just sleeping? Web analytics company, Contentsquare, recently published a report about web activity after tracking 161 billion page views across 2942 websites. There's a lot of interesting data in their report, but we only care about seeing how local businesses can effectively attract new customers, right? Right.

Let's look at the most common business types that you're likely interested in and see how new visitors found their websites in Q4 of 2023.

Service businesses:

SEO: 22.8%

Paid Ads: 15%

Email: 1.7%

Social: 1.5%

Retail businesses:

Paid Ads: 39%

SEO: 21.6%

Email: 5.6%

Social: 2.3%

*The rest of the traffic comes from "other" sources.

You read that right! Only an average of 1.9% of web traffic comes from organic social media efforts. I'll let that sink in instead of explaining how tiny that is compared to the effort it takes to maintain a social media presence as a local business owner. It's like squeezing a gigantic hard lemon that's out of season for just a drop of juice. (Ok, I got carried away and explained it anyway. I just get excited sometimes!)

Anyway, our key takeaway is that if you're a business owner focusing on organic social media growth to get customers, throw that effort into SEO, ads, a wacky waving inflatable tube man.. ANYTHING. Just don't rely solely on organic social media posting to grow your business. It's a good idea to work on your presence on popular social media platforms, but only if you're also paying for ads there.

We think the best bang for your buck (and effort) is focusing on your Google Business Profile SEO since that's what the vast majority of people now use to find local businesses.
